Fintech jobs in India: an application checklist for engineers
Prepare for fintech engineering roles with evidence of reliable APIs, payment failure handling and careful treatment of financial data.
Understand what the company actually does
Fintech includes payment infrastructure, lending, financial software and other businesses with very different customers and constraints. Before applying, trace one user journey through the product. Who sends money or information, what system receives it and what happens when an operation fails? Do not assume that a fintech employer is a bank or that every engineering role requires the same regulatory knowledge. Read the role and ask which responsibilities your team owns.
Show reliability, not only feature delivery
A useful engineering example explains how your system behaves during retries, delays and partial failures. For payment-related APIs, learn why idempotency matters: a retried request should not unintentionally repeat a money-moving action. Stripe's documentation gives a concrete example of idempotent API requests. Use a sandbox or simulated workflow in your portfolio; do not collect real payment credentials or customer financial records to make a demo look realistic.
Prepare a system-design discussion
Describe a transaction lifecycle with clear states, logs and reconciliation. Explain how you would investigate a disagreement between a customer-facing status and an upstream provider response. Be ready to discuss access control, auditability and keeping sensitive information out of logs. You do not need to pretend to be a compliance specialist. Identify assumptions, explain what you would verify and ask how engineering works with security, risk and operations.
Compare the role and offer carefully
Ask about production access, incident response, on-call expectations and the review process for sensitive changes. Compare guaranteed compensation separately from bonuses and equity; a company's industry does not establish its salary band.
