Machine learning startup jobs: build a portfolio that shows judgment
Distinguish data, applied AI and machine learning roles, and prepare a reproducible portfolio with evaluation, limitations and deployment trade-offs.
Separate model work from product integration
Data engineering, machine learning engineering and applied AI roles are not interchangeable. A posting may focus on pipelines, training, inference infrastructure or integrating an existing model into a product. Highlight the tasks you have actually performed. Read the required qualifications carefully, especially for research-heavy positions. If the title is broad, ask which deliverable the team expects in the first few months and who owns data quality and model evaluation.
Build a reproducible evaluation
Choose a small problem with a dataset you are allowed to use. Explain the baseline, train/test split, evaluation metric and examples where the approach fails. Google's Machine Learning Crash Course is a useful foundation for concepts such as classification and generalization. If your project uses a language model, include a fixed set of test cases and explain what counts as an acceptable answer. Avoid presenting a successful demo as proof that the system works on all inputs.
Explain operational trade-offs
Describe latency, cost, access controls and how the system handles missing or unexpected input. Document what you would monitor after deployment and when a human should review the result. An honest limitation can be more informative than an unsupported accuracy claim. Keep proprietary datasets and personal information out of a public repository. Include setup instructions so a reviewer can reproduce the example without private credentials.
Match the evidence to the job
For a data role, lead with reliable pipelines and data checks. For an applied AI role, show evaluation and integration into a useful workflow. For an infrastructure role, explain serving, monitoring and failure recovery. Browse Jobloom's Data & AI category and AI & Machine Learning industry pages, then compare the original requirements with your experience. A strong application makes the relevant work easy to inspect and clearly labels what you are still learning.
