Startup jobs vs big-tech jobs: how to choose

Compare ownership, support, cash pay and risk when choosing between a startup and a large tech company.

Compare the actual teams

Company size alone does not determine your work. A startup role may offer broad ownership but fewer established processes; a large team may offer mentoring and specialization. Ask about the specific manager, team and project in each interview.

Separate compensation from upside

Compare guaranteed cash, benefits, bonuses and equity separately. A startup option grant is not the same as liquid stock. Ask about vesting and exercise terms, and do not assume equity will pay out.

Choose for your current season

If you want to build across disciplines and tolerate ambiguity, a small team may appeal. If you need predictable processes or a specialist path, a larger organization may fit better. Neither path guarantees stability or rapid growth.
